Is Artificial Intelligence Dangerous?
One thing that movies and pop culture taught us is that Artificial Intelligence is dangerous and there is a possibility of machines taking over the world. But is this possible?
As days go by, more and more sophisticated technology gets invented and this does not exclude AI. And since this dwells in the realm of the unknown, the general public doesn’t immediately understand both the benefits and implications of said AI.

A more common fear about the innovation of AI is the disruption of the current economic state. Most people work jobs that can only be done manually by people and if these jobs can already be automated by machines, then several people would find themselves without jobs. Sometimes, innovation is not as slow as people can cope up and that is why fear can be the go-to reaction of people when talking about this subject matter.
People, albeit in a more subtle way, may have already felt the effects of AI on modern society. Automation is the enemy of the skilled worker. According to a study conducted by the Brooking Institution back in 2019, there is a risk of 36 million people losing their jobs to automation in the next few years. Dangerous is an arbitrary term, however, losing a job can also be considered as dangerous given the current state of the world we are living in.
Artificial Intelligence in the first place was created for comfort, speed, and convenience. But this does not mean that AI is fool-proof. Something that is programmed can be hacked or be infected by malware. Common AI like automatic flagging systems of certain apps and websites, anti-virus softwares and automated systems can all be compromised by a skilled third-party, and developers need to be cautious about these security measures when programming AIs.
Moving to a more militaristic topic. Automated weapons have already been used for the longest time now. Different governments across the world can access nuclear weapons that can be fired accurately at a certain location at a single command. If people start programming AI systems to replace human decisions based on algorithms and patterns, it could impact the safety and security of modern society.

And not only that, artificial intelligence has grown from just codes and numbers on a screen to facial recognition and facial reconstruction. Without any human element in programming these AIs it can be dangerous in terms of knowing lies from the truth. Deep fake softwares has been rampant for years now and with the advancement of technology, some deep fakes are now convincingly indistinguishable from reality. Even voices and photos can now be replicated and reconstructed by AI.
Is a Robot Uprising Possible?
Films such as Terminator, Age of Ultron, etc., has always portrayed AI as a monster that humans made in good faith only for it to backfire and threaten the human race. Nevertheless, people should be able to differentiate reality from fiction.
Theoretically, AI sentience and self–consciousness is possible, but is not very applicable. Humans program machines to do tasks that do not need self-awareness. Simple jobs that automated machines need to do do not require self-consciousness. Scientists, engineers, and inventors would not invent super advanced machines for simple tasks, and although it is possible, it is not essential, it is not needed, and needless to say, it will be very costly to do something that is not important to the task at hand.
Automated turrets, weapons, guns, drones, and ships have been automated for years and there is no reason for companies and manufacturers to make a fully sentient AI to achieve such simple and very specific tasks. AI can still go against the decision of the human pilot/user, but it is not like what happens in movies and more likely like when a map app changes routes because of traffic.

Another problem with this question is that people always assume that machines or robots would need to take a human form in order to even begin to think about taking over. People usually associate AI with Alien Technology or something that is cryptic when addressing something that is vaguely known by the public, especially when there are documented alleged sightings of UFOs from time to time. Basically, people should not be scared of robots, because they are man-made. People should be scared of people that have advanced technology because people are people and people have their own agendas. Whether people choose to advance technology for the greater good of mankind, for self-gain, or for destruction.
There is no need to fear artificial intelligence as of this moment. There are ethics and certains laws that cover these kinds of things. Developers for sure are taking all the necessary precautions to prevent advanced AI from attempting malicious decisions, and at the end of the day, AI is something that is manmade and can be shut-off. However, it is not new for new and advanced technology to be misused.
